Imagine being totally alone in the world and finding out that you have a possibly fatal disease and being told that now you must give up your only companion because just caring for your pet may kill you. Every year this scenario happens to thousands of people and many of them suffer depression and other negative health effects. Most people think of HIV when they are asked to list a disease that causes immune suppression, however this is a very narrow mindset. Cancer patients, the elderly, those with organ transplants, patients on steroids for autoimmune diseases, and many others all suffer from immunocompromise. Often well meaning doctors tell these patients that they can not keep their pets any longer because their weakened immune systems cannot fight off diseases the pets may carry.
Of course this is absolutely not true and there is no reason for people to get rid of their pets. It has even been shown that patients that own animals fare better than those without. So what is the deal then? There are diseases that pets carry that people without good immune systems can get and many of these can be fatal. Human doctors are mostly concerned with Toxoplasma, Bartonella, Ascarids, fungal diseases, Salmonella, and Mycobateria. Many HIV patients suffer from Toxoplasma which usually causes fatal encephalitis, but there have been studies done that demonstrate that cat ownership did not increase the chance of getting the disease. You are more likely to get the disease from eating undercooked meat or not washing your vegetables before eating them. This is the scenario with most zoonotic diseases MD’s are concerned with.
So what can be done? Common sense goes a long way. Wash your hands frequently, especially before eating. Don’t let your animal lick your face or share food with them. Cook all of your food thoroughly. Have someone else empty the litter box or wear disposable gloves if you must do it. As far as pet care goes, it would be a good idea to let your veterinarian know about your health problem. Of course you don’t have to go into specifics but just letting them know you have a weakened immune system will give them the ability to cater to your needs. Your pet may need more frequent check ups, more de-wormings, and other medical care.
Of course your human doctor knows what is best for your health, but many vets would be happy discussing some of the new studies with them and helping show them why it is ok for immune compromised patients to own pets. The important thing is that you communicate with both your MD and DVM and follow their guidelines.
